Boxing

Boxing entered America sometime in the 1700s. It became popular in the urban regions in the 1800s, but even then, the contests were limited to Irishmen who came in search of job opportunities. The Irish fought with the Native Americans or the English to earn a living.

Moreover, boxing matches were illegal until the late 1800s. Things began to change when a religious group saw boxing as a way to build physical and moral strength. Do you know that Theodore Roosevelt was a strong advocate of this movement?

In 1882, John L. Sullivan earned his name as the first American heavyweight in the bare boxing category. He became a champion again a decade later in 1892, but this time in the gloved boxing category by defeating James Corbett.

The Walker Law (New York state law) made boxing/ prizefighting legal in 1920. It led to the creation of the New York State Athletic Commission. It wasn’t long before National Boxing Association (now known as World Boxing Association) was formed by representatives from thirteen other states in America.
