CFL Football

The CFL (Canadian Football League) was officially established in 1958. Canadian teams, however, participated in the annual Grey Cup games long before the CFL came into existence.

The Canadian Football League was limited to Canada until 1993. Even the gridiron form was different from what was a standard in America. The gridiron had ten yards extra between the goal lines. It is also twelve yards wider than the football fields in the US. A couple of rules were also different.

However, financial constraints and heavy losses resulted in CFL entering the US and becoming a part of the American football expansion in 1993. American teams joined the CFL and played for two years. While things got better for a bit, trouble began when the Canadian teams lost attendance.

It didn’t help that the NFL's Cleveland Browns announced they would move to Baltimore the next season. When the move became official, the attendance and support crashed overnight. Soon, it was inevitable that the remaining American CFL teams would move away, though they were offered a chance to join the 1996 season.

American CFL Teams

The following American teams were in the CFL from 1993 to 1995.

  • Baltimore FC/ Baltimore Stallions
  • Birmingham Barracudas
  • Las Vegas Posse
  • Memphis Mad Dogs
  • Sacramento Gold Miners
  • San Antonio Texans
  • Shreveport Pirates

CFL Back in Canada

The CFL once again had only Canadian teams when they began the 1996 season. Financial instabilities affected the league for the next four years. 2000 was the year of improvement, and the league began to expand gradually by adding and re-launching teams.

Though Americans continued to invest in the CFL, a majority of the league was owned by Canadians. One aspect CFL was particularly ensured was that the Canadian roots stayed firm in CFL. They wanted it to represent Canada even when American football players formed a substantial part of the teams.

‘This is our league’ was the motto of CFL. In 2015, CFL had 20 Canadian players in a total of 42. Rules dictated that 7 in 24 starters had to be Canadian players to encourage local talent in the country.
