Cricket Info

Cricket

Cricket is the second most liked sport across the world after soccer. It has billions of fans and is played in many countries. Cricket has its roots in England. The archives show cricket matches played during 1709, while the first official documentation of the match happened in 1751.

Countries like Australia, India, New Zealand, South Africa, etc., boast of owing some of the greatest cricket players over the years. However, this sport wasn’t as successful in America.

Cricket and Baseball

Baseball has an extensive fan base in America and is one of the leading sports in the country. Cricket’s slight similarity with baseball made it difficult for the sport to establish itself as a worthy counterpart.

However, cricket was never dead in the US. Immigrants from other countries, especially West Indies and Southeast Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Bangladesh), have actively played cricket and promoted it in the US.

History of Cricket in the U.S.

Philadelphia has been a prominent place for cricket to grow in the US. In 1833, a cricket team was formed by Haverford College. It took more than three decades for a rivalry to crop up between this team and the team from the University of Pennsylvania. The first match was held in 1964. The two teams played for three consecutive years until Haverford College banned cricket on the campus.

An international cricket match was held between USA and Canada in 1895. The men’s cricket team entered WCL Division II in 2018. The US women’s national cricket team won the qualifier at the Women's T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier in 2021.

Cricket and Contemporary U.S.

The success of the IPL (Indian Premier League) further made cricket popular in America. Immigrants, second & third-generation Indian-Americans, Caribbean-Americans, etc., watched the matches telecasted on television.

The USA Cricket partnered with the American Cricket Enterprises (ACE) and The Times of India group to create a US T20 Cricket League. The first batch of teams will be from Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, San Francisco, New Jersey, and Atlanta.

USA Cricket has also decided to provide support to national men’s and women’s cricket teams. Branding, betting, and large-scale promotions will make cricket the new popular game among Americans. The increasing interest in cricket in the US is going to bring huge crowds to the stadiums.
