History

The National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players' Association have only recognized two leagues, namely the ECHL and the AHL.

The Carolina Thunderbirds, Erie Panthers, Johnstown Chiefs, Knoxville Cherokees, and Virginia Lancers were the teams forming ECHL in 1988.

Originally known as the East Coast Hockey League, it was reduced to the ECHL only in 2003; its greatest size was 31 teams in the 2004-05 season.
