MLL Lacrosse Info

MLL Lacrosse

In 1999, “Body by Jake” founder Jake Steinfeld founded Major League Lacrosse (MLL) after acknowledging the increasing popularity of Lacrosse in North America. With six teams playing ten to sixteen games, the league’s regular-season play commenced in June 2001.

And fascinatingly, MLL has tracked astronomical growth across streaming, broadcast, digital platforms, and social. But why is MLL so popular?

The December Merger Turned MLL On its Head

On December 16, 2020, MLL merged with the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL). The Premier Lacrosse League constitutes a different model for all other professional sports, including Lacrosse. The players themselves organized and operated the PLL, enjoying a stake in the league. On the contrary, the MLL players aren’t permitted to collaborate.

However, the PLL enjoys a consistent television presence, higher power for the players, and a higher concentration of talent. Thus, it was apparently the more upgraded option for professional Lacrosse. And it is contributing to the growth of lacrosse spectatorship and, eventually, MLL’s fans.

So what does this collaboration mean for pro lacrosse? First, it signifies a complete reinvention of pro lacrosse with a modern aptitude, appealing to a wider viewership.

MLL: The Legacy Version of Lacrosse

Since the 1980s, Lacrosse has been one of the professional sports in North America. In 2001, MLL commenced as the heritage version of Lacrosse and gained popularity as the first successful outdoor pro lacrosse sport, marketing across the United States. The Major League Lacrosse set a record with 6.400 fans a game in 2011.

Unique Rules that Define MLL

Another reason MLL has so many fans and spectators is the rules that are different from college and high school rules. MLL follows a 60-sec shot clock, and thus, there’s no box of restraining. The shot clock keeps the game fast and enthusiastic. Possession goes to the other team upon the expiry of the shot clock.

Another unique rule of the two-point arc keeps up the game’s appeal. The team gains two points rather than one if the player’s two feet are behind the line when scoring the ball.

So why is MLL a must-see sport? It’s the fastest, most exciting, and the best Lacrosse being played today. Besides talent, you get to see the quality, drive, and commitment of MLL players to the game. And that makes for millions of fans and viewers. It is said that MLL teams play for their love for the game, not the fame. So why not explore the game yourself? Browse our website and book your tickets today.
