Following World War I, the popularity of motorcycle racing started to skyrocket. Everything drew mass attention, from the broad track racing to the racing style.

Early Beginnings

The establishment of the Federation of American Motorcycles in New York City paved the way for motorcycle racing in North America in 1903. Europe already had big motorcycle racing clubs. However, federations of America initially started with the new motorcycles’ popularity. With a 1.5hp engine, the New Werner bikes could reach up to 30mph.

On the other hand, the 2.5hp engine delivered enough power to drive the Thomas Auto-Bi up to 35mph. Motorcycle racing started on wooden tracks in Los Angeles in 1909. Following it, other racetracks turned up across the country. Motorcycle racing’s popularity skyrocketed in the western states. Riders didn’t have to long for warmer months to race as it could occur all year.

Motorcycle racing soon became known as “speedway racing” and unpaved or dirt surface racing as “track racing.”

Rise in Popularity

After World War I ended, motorcycle racing gained more attention reaching a new level of popularity. The automobile industry advanced technologically, allowing upgraded racetracks and greater speeds. In addition, riders enjoyed more control over new wheels and suspensions during dirt racing.

The Daytona 200 race began to be held on paved track by 1961, organized by the newly formed Daytona International Speedway. However, the transition from a beach to paved surface racing garnered low attendance initially. But the racing captivated more spectators and fans with international recognition and support over the years.

Motorcycle racing has unfolded into different bike variations and types – motocross, road racing, track racing, and cross-country racing. However, the Isle of Man TT is ideally the world’s most favored motorcycle race.

Overall, racing entertains fans and spectators with varied styles and genres. For some, it’s thrilling to watch a mater doing something that they can barely imagine at an expertise level. Others are captivated by the strategy incorporated throughout a season. However, most racing is strictly permitted these days to tighten the racing and enhance safety, thereby boosting the entertainment factor for enthusiasts worldwide.
