Founded in 1982, the NCAA Softball Tournament is a Division 1 tournament where 64 colleges in the United States participate. The tournament finally ends with the Women's College World Series, which is held in Oklahoma City.
Softball is much similar to baseball, with the only difference being that it is played with a larger ball. And the field being comparatively smaller than that of the baseball, the game is fast.
NCAA Softball Format
The NCAA Softball tournament is divided into four phases or tiers. The most exciting aspect of the game is the format of the tournament. Usually, a couple of losses are enough to eliminate a team from the tournament. And yet, in the NCAA, a team can lose up to four matches and still stand a chance to compete in the finals and win the tournament.
Out of the 64 teams, 32 teams gain direct into the final tournament based on certain factors, while the Division 1 Softball Committee chooses the remaining 32. Then 16 teams are given the coveted "national seeds" and are given regional sites, which are generally their home grounds.
Various Rounds of the NCAA Softball Tournament
The first round of the game is one of the most interesting, which takes place across 16 locations in the country. This is the “regionals" round, where the teams engage in the double-elimination bracket. The winner from each "regionals" moves to the second round, the "super regionals."
Ultimately, the final eight teams compete at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, with the winner of the WCWS becoming the national champion.
