Volleyball Info

Volleyball

Volleyball is a fun and energetic sport that was first played in 1895 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, in the United States. Each team comprises six players, and the court is divided by a net. The sport was also included in the Summer Olympics in 1964, held in Tokyo. Although the sport has an extensive set of rules, the crux of the game is to ground the ball at the other team’s court to score a point.

Variation of Volleyball

A common variation of the game is beach volleyball, where the sport is played on the sand by the beach. The sport was made quite popular with the volleyball scene in the 1986 hit Hollywood film "Top Gun," starring Tom Cruise. The highest governing body for the sport is FIVB. The game is also played in Paralympic Games as Sitting Volleyball.

Rules of the Game

The main rule of the game is that none of the teams must allow the ball to touch the ground on their side of the court. They have to send it across the net to the opponent's side in such a way that they cannot pass it back, and the ball hits their ground instead.

The game starts with a rally, with one team throwing the ball over the net. The receiving team can touch the ball three to four times to prevent it from hitting the ground, but one player cannot hit the ball twice consecutively.

The ball should then be hit back to the other court by hitting it with hands or arms. The back and forth continues till the ball touches the ground, in which case the team that threw the ball gains a point at the end of the rally. They also have the opportunity to start the next rally. The matches typically last for an hour.

Volleyball matches are as exciting to watch as they are to play. Even as spectators, you will end up having a lot of fun.
