WNBA Basketball Info

WNBA Basketball

WNBA stands for Women's National Basketball Association, a sports league for women basketball players from the US. It was formed in 1996 as a counterpart to NBA (National Basketball Association), which deals with the men’s basketball league.

The association has twelve teams and is the only women’s basketball league that is fully backed by NBA. The first season of the WNBA was held in 1997, with the first game played by New York Liberty and Los Angeles Sparks. The league had eight teams by then.

History and Achievements

WNBA had twelve teams by 1999 after two of them joined in 1988 and two more joined in 1999. In the same year, the league signed the first-ever collective bargaining agreement. No other women’s professional league has done so before WNBA.

The Houston Comets was the first women’s basketball team to win an invitation to the White House Rose Garden in 2000. The team went on to win its fourth championship at the end of the season in the same year.

The league, teams, and players went through a rough patch during 2003. However, they were back in action by 2006. It became the first women’s professional sports league to last for a decade and play all ten seasons.

More teams were added over the years, while some were relocated or let go. WNBA has been associated with a total of eighteen women’s basketball teams since its inception.

WNBA and NBA Teams

  • Half the WNBA teams (six) are directly associated with NBA teams. These are called sister teams and play in the same market. Only Sparks has separate ownership.
  • Three other WNBA teams belong to the same market as NBA even though they are not affiliated or sister teams.
  • Five WNBA teams have the same market as the NBA G League (a minor basketball association).

WNBA has its regular gaming sessions in May every year. Every team in the league has to play thirty-six matches during each season. The league plays the following tournaments, apart from Summer Olympics and FIBA World Cup.

  • WNBA Commissioner's Cup:
  • WNBA All-Star Game
  • WNBA Playoffs
  • WNBA Finals
