MLS or Men’s League Soccer was founded in 1993 and was sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation. It represents the highest level of men's professional soccer in the country. It comprises a total of 28 teams, with 25 from the U.S. and the remaining 3 from Canada.
The soccer season starts in mid-February or early March and continues till October, with each team playing 34 games each. Hence, it is one of the major tournaments in the country, with fans following their favorite teams for the better part of a year.
The Best Teams
Some teams that have gone on to win the MLS Cup multiple times are the L.A. Galaxy, D.C. United, Columbus Crew, San Jose Earthquakes, Sporting Kansas City, and Seattle Sounders F.C., among others. Some other notable teams are Houston Dynamo FC, Chicago Fire F.C., Real Salt Lake, and Colorado Rapids, among others.
Over the years, new teams have been added to the league, and more can also become a part of it in the future. The teams are further divided into Eastern and Western Conferences. The teams play several rival matches and are mostly determined according to their geographical locations, much like the college football teams.
Famous and Designated Players
The MLS, much like other soccer championships, largely provides entertainment to the audience at large, and yet it has always been dedicated to maintaining the quality of the game. Players who play in the MLS are expected to do so largely because of the love and respect of the game rather than merely for monetary gains.
Hence, MLS has a salary cap in place. Teams can assign a few "designated players" whose wages can go beyond the salary cap, but those are limited in number and rules they have to adhere to.
Over the years, the league has seen several high-profile players becoming a part of some of the teams, with the likes of Pele and Beckenbauer. That further attracted other bigger names like George Best and Bobby Moore, and David Beckham was the first designated player.
If you are a soccer fan, you must have watched soccer matches in person. However, nothing can prepare you for the madness and cheer that surrounds an MLS match.
Moreover, it is amazing to root for your favorite team in person as they score a much-coveted goal with all the other fans. So book your tickets for a life-changing experience.
